Reading
Students participate in whole group reading activities to further develop language skills. Students have many opportunities to hear, read, discuss and respond to high quality fiction and nonfiction texts. Students expand upon foundational reading skills to independently read texts at their developmental reading level with fluency and comprehension. Students are placed in small reading groups based on their personal reading level so that they can reach their full potential as readers. Reading instruction is differentiated whenever possible so that all children are engaged and challenged. Students reading above grade level will be challenged with high level texts and reading extension activities.
Writing
Students are challenged to go beyond basic writing through our Writer's Workshop program. Teachers use high quality texts to provide examples of good writing and then support students as they work through the writing process to produce and publish final draft pieces of personal writing. Students write a variety of opinion, narrative, and informative pieces throughout the school year. Students will learn to use technology as they research and publish various writing pieces throughout the year.
Math
Students engage in concrete, abstract and rational math lessons each day to extend their mathematical knowledge. Students use a variety of strategies to fluently add and subtract within 100. Students use their knowledge of base tens to understand and compare numbers to 1000. Students engage in measurement activities, learn how to tell time, recognize the value of money, represent and interpret data, work with fractions, understand odd and even numbers, work with arrays, and use problem solving skills to solve one and two step word problems. Students work in whole group, small groups, with a partner and individually to explore and discuss concepts and to complete activities. Students working above grade level in math will be challenged accordingly.
Science & Social Studies
Students explore a variety of science topics aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. Topics support reading and writing development while allowing students to engage in the scientific process. Students discuss observations and predictions, research information to add to their schema, conduct experiments, and record outcomes and observations.
Students participate in Social Studies topics that focus on 'Our National Identity and Culture" as outlined in NV Academic Content Standards for Social Studies. Lessons cover History, Multicultural studies, Civics, Geography, Economics and Financial Literacy.
Teachers use high quality texts to support learning in both subject areas. Students engage in project based learning activities to support their growth and provide opportunities for them to teach others what they have learned.
Speaking & Listening
Students have ample opportunity to discuss ideas with partners and work in collaborative groups. Students present projects that align to various subject areas. Students present final draft writing to classmates and peers.
Fine Motor Skills
Students further refine fine motor skills through daily writing assignments, the use of manipulatives and other building materials, and access to various art materials.
Gross Motor Skills
Students have two daily recess breaks and a weekly Physical Education class to further develop gross motor skills like: running, jumping, hopping, skipping, climbing, throwing, and catching. Outdoor play gives students chances to participate in group games.
Social & Emotional Development
Students are expected to follow classroom & school rules. Students are expected to accept responsibility for their actions and correct mistakes in an appropriate way. Students are expected to exhibit respectful behavior to adults and classmates. Students are expected to work collaboratively and to build independent working skills. Students are expected to work through social and emotional difficulties with the help of a trusted adult.
Spiritual Development
Students are expected to demonstrate love and respect for God by listening and participating in Chapel. Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of God's Word through story retell and writing responses.
